Victory, Power & Glory

Editor’s Note: This is the first blog entry that will be a part of several leading up to North Beach’s CD Release and Night of Worship on Sunday, July 18. These stories are written by the songwriters themselves to give you a “behind the scenes” look at the inspiration behind the song that will appear on the new CD.

by Josh Cecil

The inspiration for this song comes from Brazil. I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of two teams on a mission trip to encourage our global partners in Brazil, as well as hand out Bibles at schools we visited there. One of the missionaries we support in Piracaruca, Brazil, is Pastor Moises.

He has a very boisterous personality and is a very progressive minded leader. On our last trip to Brazil, Pastor Moises took us to a run-down bario on the outskirts of Parnaiba. We saw nothing but dirt roads, shacks and garbage…in a word, poverty. Pastor Moises explained that of the 4,000 people that lived there, most were prostitutes or drug addicts.

There was no electricity or running water.

It was a desperate place.

Pastor Moises’s church had raised money to buy a small building and some land in the middle of the bario to build a church, daycare center, community garden and to dig a well to supply water to the community.

We walked through the bario and ended up at the church. The building itself was smaller than my kitchen, but we sat in there with a few people from the community, about 20 North American students and adults, and we worshiped and prayed together as the body of Christ.

It was a very moving experience.

That night I was reminded of a song I had heard at Pastor Moises’s church, as it had a very memorable melody and chorus. It was called, “Vitoria, Poder, y Gloria”…or Victory, Power, and Glory in English.

I asked Pastor Moises what it meant, and he said it was a song that proclaimed that the Church would be victorious and that nothing could stop us from changing the world because we are empowered by Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. I am reminded of Jesus’ words in Matthew 16:18 when he says to Peter, “…and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

I wrote this song because I connected with what my Brazilian brothers and sisters were proclaiming. The church of Jesus Christ should rise up and settle for nothing less than changing the face of the world.

One of the great things about working with this generation of youth is seeing their desire for that change and their desire for justice for all of God’s people.  These teens want to do more than just go to church and wait around to get into heaven. Their faith is pushing them into the world, empowering them to help make God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven and to care for the poor, the widow, the orphan, the marginalized and forgotten people.

They believe that Christ died on the cross to save them for something, not from something. It’s inspiring to see their faith in action.

Ultimately that is what Victory, Power, and Glory… and really the entire album “SEND” is about. It’s the cry of this generation to see victory over injustice, through God’s mighty power, to see His glory revealed here in our world.

Below are the lyrics to “Victory, Power & Glory.”

You reached out to us
And called us each by name
Raised us to new life
How could we remain the same
And we’ll rise, we will rise, In Your
Victory, Power, and Glory
Victory, Power, and Glory
Jesus Your everything, our Holy and Mighty King
In Your Victory, Power, and Glory
You commanded us
To care for the least of these
Father break our hearts
And bring us to Your knees
And we’ll pray, we will pray, to see Your
Victory, Power, and Glory
Victory, Power, and Glory
Jesus Your everything, our Holy and Mighty King
In Your Victory, Power, and Glory
We will be Your hands
We will be Your feet
We will bring Your light
So the world may see, So the world will see
Your
Victory, Power, and Glory
Victory, Power, and Glory
Jesus Your everything, our Holy and Mighty King
In Your Victory, Power, and Glory
